 Ladies Lunching: A Feminist Approach to Poetic Hits 


Taylor Swift is one of the most prolific and popular artists of this generation. My thesis is going to analyze a handful of her songs and determine whether part of her success could correlate to how feminist her texts are. Each of these songs describes the story or situation of a woman. I plan to treat these songs as actual poetic literary texts and analyze them using feminist criticism. According to the feminst criticism definition, women writers have their own style, so in doing my analysis, I plan to find Taylor Swift’s unique style of writing, and how that style influences how feminine, or not, her songs are. There are also phases of feminist writing, which are Feminine, Feminist, and Female, and I plan to group these songs into those categories where they best fit. The definition also states that a lot of women writers have the option to play into the male dominated discourse, and support the patriarchy, or opt out and stay silent. I want to look at these texts and determine whether they do, in fact, support the male dominated discourse, or if Taylor Swift has created a third option that was not given, and is choosing to not stay silent, and also not worship the patriarchy.

method

 I gathered my data by looking up the lyrics to the songs Betty, Dorothea, Cardigan, The Last Great American Dynasty, Mad Woman, and No Body, No Crime by Taylor Swift. Once I gathered my data, I analyzed them and sorted them into Showalter’s three phases of feminist writing: Feminine, Feminist, and Female. After analyzing them further, I will attempt to find how these texts portray women’s  desires and the relationship between men and women. I will use writings such as Judith Butlers to help me find these answers.
